Mike Baldoza Wins on his Home Course in Austin, Tx
The Texas Putting Tour continued its season on Saturday at the Austin, Texas course. The first round saw Jeffrey Smith take a one stroke lead shooting a 10 under 26. Lee Messinger was alone in second place with Mike Baldoza and Wade Sahmel tied for third two strokes behind Jeffrey. The only other player in the field under 32 was Steve Tanton who was in at 7 under 29. Brice Bergesen got hot in the second round, his 11 under 25 was the best round shot for the day and moved him back into contention two strokes off the lead being shared by Mike Baldoza and Lee Messinger at 55. With Steve Tanton in at 56 and Wade Sahmel and Jeffrey Smith tied with Brice two strokes off the pace the last round would be interesting. The last round would come down to the last four holes. Lee. Lee had started off strong on the back nine making four of the first five holes but was unable to close the nine only making the 17th hole coming down the stretch. Mike meanwhile came to the last four holes one stroke behind Lee but made all four of closing holes to shoot a 9 under 27 for a 26 under 82 total and a two stroke win. Lee finished alone in second with Steve Tanton and Jeffrey Smith finishing tied for third three in back of Mike. The win was Mike’s first of the year and also earned him a state spot. Additional spots went to Kenny Beck and Jon Drexler. After two rounds in the amateur division Dave Blalock held a two stroke lead over Adam Sahmel and Steve Willmann. Very early on in the last round it was clear that Dave was going to win as he easily outpaced both Adam and Steve. His final total of 19 under 89 would give him a comfortable seven stroke margin over Steve Willmann who bested Adam by one stroke for second place. The win also gave Dave a state spot. Additional spots went Alan Sahmel and Trevor Lewin.
